Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe National Park, located in the southwest corner of Rwanda, is a vast, untouched tropical rainforest with a high, dense canopy. Designated as a National Park in 2004, Rwanda aimed to expand its tourism offerings beyond the famous mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park. Nyungwe’s remarkable biodiversity makes it truly deserving of its protected status.
Stepping into the heart of Nyungwe Forest is like entering a fairy tale. Towering mahoganies, ebonies, and giant tree ferns stretch overhead, while orchids and other epiphytes drape the branches. Brightly colored birds dart through the trees, butterflies fill the air, and with a bit of luck and silence, you might encounter some of the park’s famous primates.
For a true sense of Nyungwe’s grandeur, embark on East Africa’s highest canopy walk. Suspended 50 meters above the forest floor, this metal bridge offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the lush rainforest below. While it’s not for the faint of heart, the unforgettable experience of seeing Nyungwe stretch out beneath you is well worth the adventure.
Primate safaris trekking
Nyungwe National Park is a prime destination for primate enthusiasts, hosting 13 distinct species. Many visitors choose to embark on at least one tracking adventure, with chimpanzee trekking being the standout option. The experience starts early in the morning, as groups of eight set off to locate the chimps. Once found, trekkers are allowed an hour with these remarkable creatures. Although sightings may not be as frequent or clear as with gorillas, due to their preference for dense forest cover, the chimps’ playful behavior and human-like qualities make the trek incredibly rewarding.
Nyungwe Forest also offers trekking opportunities to spot grey-cheeked mangabeys and Rwenzori colobus monkeys, the latter of which can be seen in large troops numbering in the hundreds. You won’t need to trek far to catch a glimpse of L’Hoest’s monkeys; they are often spotted ambling along the roadside as you drive through the park.
