Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu, part of the African Great Lakes, straddles the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The name “Kivu” derives from a Bantu language, meaning simply “lake.”
The lake is situated within the Albertine Rift, part of the western section of the East African Rift. Approximately 58% of its surface area is found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, while the remaining portion lies in Rwanda. The lake features irregular shorelines that create numerous inlets and peninsulas, along with a variety of waterfalls. It is predominantly encircled by mountains, especially in the northern and western regions, where several peaks rise above 2,800 meters. The western shoreline is also home to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest and most picturesque lake, reminiscent of the Indian Ocean coastlines of Kenya or the serene beaches of Zanzibar in Tanzania. It serves as a popular getaway for Rwandans, expatriates, and visitors looking to unwind and enjoy a few days of relaxation.
